ACS Newsletter May 3, 2026

Updated: 2 days ago

Greetings, Coyote Families.

Thank you for a great Week! We have a very Busy wee and the last week before our EOGs! I know that staff and students are eager to show evidence of the hard work they’ve put in this year!

As always, we do need all students here, on time,  and ready to work. Please also talk to your children about coming to school, ready to learn. Behaviors that hinder teaching and learning will receive logical consequences in order to optimize learning and review.

ACS 2nd Annual Field Day & Kick Back

DRESS CODE CONCERNS

While it is getting warmer outside, students must follow the dress code. The major concerns addressed this past week were:

  • Tank tops and short(cut-off) shirts.

  • Short Shorts. Remember, shorts should be mid-Thigh. This includes biker shorts that are short as well.

  • Pajama pants: These should be reserved for spirit days only.

  • Blankets - students can wear jackets in cooler classrooms, but blankets are becoming a distraction during class and transitions. Please do not allow students to bring blankets to school.

All students were spoken to about the dress code. While it seems to have become a focus, we have not changed the rules or their enforcement; there are just more infractions lately that need to be addressed. Please monitor what your child(ren) wear to school so that we don’t have to call for a clothing change.

ENERGY DRINKS NOT ALLOWED!

To keep our students safe, focused, and feeling their best, energy drinks are not allowed on campus at ACS!

⚡️ Why? These drinks often contain extremely high levels of caffeine, taurine, and other stimulants that can cause:• Headaches 😣• Jitters & anxiety 😬• Trouble focusing 🌀• Energy crashes 😴

📌 What to know:✅ Energy drinks will be confiscated and disposed of if brought to school.✅ No disciplinary action will be taken.✅ Info will be shared with families about the risks.

🚫 Examples: Red Bull, Monster, Bang, Celsius, etc.✅ Better boosts: Water 💧, Fruit 🍎, Sleep 😴, Movement 🏃‍♂️

Let's work together to keep our students healthy, happy, and ready to learn!

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK!

Teacher appreciation is HERE! It's not too late to consider contributing to our gift card drive. Our teachers work tirelessly to ensure students grow and have what they need for success at the next level. We want to make sure they feel appreciated during this week. While the gift Card drive is our main push, if you have gifts that you would like to donate for our daily drawing, please bring them to the main office. Thank you for supporting our teachers at ACS!

ACS MUSICAL

Congratualtions to the AWESOME production of Beauty and the Beast Jr! MS. W and Ms. M are amazing, and so was the crew & Actors!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

The first two Wednesdays in May will be Full Days. Remember, these are days needed to make up for time lost to Snow and Tornado warnings, and this was the better choice than adding days to the end of the year.

The following Wednesdays will now be full days:

May 6th

May 13th

The last day of school will now dismiss at 12:15!

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month!!!

“Mental health is wealth, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month. The stigma around mental health and treatment has long existed, even though this has started to change. Still, people hesitate to seek help or even talk about it with their loved ones for fear of being judged and facing unnecessary backlash. Simple logic dictates that if we are hurt anywhere, we must seek treatment to get better. This applies to both our mental- and physical well-being.” -National Today

Please read the May is Mental Health Awareness Month (ACS 2026) document to learn ways that you & your family can take part in ending mental health bias and discrimination, and help build a healthy nation that celebrates children's strengths.

Rising 7th Graders: Required Immunizations

Students entering 7th grade are required to have one dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccine and one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine for individuals who have not already received those vaccines. Please contact your student's health care provider or the local health department to obtain an updated immunization record or to make an appointment, if your child needs those vaccines.

Parents/guardians of students enrolled in 7th grade will be required to provide an updated current proof of vaccination (i.e., Certificate of Immunization from the NC Immunization registry) on or before the first day of school, August 11, 2026.

If proof of vaccination is not provided within 30 calendar days of the first day of school, your child will be excluded from school until a current shot record is provided, as required by law.

Please DO NOT send your immunization certificate to school at this time. You will be asked to provide this in the fall, during our re-enrollment process and Beginning of Year form completion for students.

For more information on required immunizations in NC, please visit: https://immunization.dph.ncdhhs.gov/family/nc_immnz_requirements.htm

If you have any questions or need additional information, please reach out to Leslie Jewell at ljewell@alamancecommunityschool.net

 Campus Cleanup Challenge

It’s time for a little clean competition!  Beginning this coming Monday, our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students are challenged to help clean up our school.  Each FULL bag of trash will receive a tally mark on the sheet provided.  Every student and teacher in the winning classroom will receive a coupon for a free treat from the Coyote Cafe provided by our ACS Ambassadors.

COYOTE CAFE

The Coyote Cafe will be open every Thursday until May 21st.  Please help our ACS Ambassadors raise funds for our food pantry every week by buying fresh fruit, crackers, granola bars, juice boxes, flavored water, and other delicious treats in the elementary gym during morning carline.  Thank you for your continued support.

VOLUNTEERING

We have loved having so many volunteers in the classroom! Thank you for supporting our students and staff!

Volunteerism at our school is a way for you, parents and guardians, to learn more about ACS, engage in a positive way with your child’s teachers, and witness firsthand the hard work and dedication that all our staff - teachers, assistants, support staff, and administrators demonstrate each and every day.

It is also a way to support your student and other students by assisting with workstations or small groups, helping with clerical tasks or lunch, and/or reading a book to the class. You don't have to be an educator to volunteer, and everyone is welcome.  Please click on the ACS Volunteer Form Link below to find ways you can volunteer to support our school.
