CONSTRUCTION & SCHOOL PLANNING UPDATE

Dear Families, First, Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Alamance Community School mothers!! I hope your day has been fantastic!

At the construction site, they poured the curb and gutter along the parking lot and the road. Work continued on the elevator shaft and once it was completed, the scaffolding was taken down. I have enjoyed watching the process from start to finish! I loved it when one of our future Kindergarteners went to check on the progress and sent me an update!!

Many of you may have seen the Governor’s announcement that the State Legislature is requiring all public schools to revise their school calendars to add 5 more instructional days and include 5 virtual learning days. Therefore, we will need to once again revise the calendar. I want to be sure that the additional days are purposeful and meaningful for our students. Also, all NC public schools are required to submit a virtual learning plan to the state in July, in case we have another spike with the coronavirus later in the year. I have begun to work on the ACS calendar revisions and the virtual learning plan with some other educators. As soon as I have a new revised calendar to include what we were told on Monday, I will share it with you. If you and your children have experienced a great program or something wonderful from their current school and/or teacher during this period of virtual learning, please share with me. It may be something we would want to include in our plan and I am always open to new ideas. You can send me an email or Facebook message me through our school Facebook page.

BEFORE & AFTER CARE

Don’t forget to look at the Before and After School information provided by Genesis Athletics at: Before & After School Care. There is a Registration Form that you can complete.

REGISTRATION UPDATE

Since Phase 1 of reopening businesses, began on May 8, please begin reaching out to your child’s doctor and school offices to begin accessing records to complete the Registration Process. I know that many schools are allowing staff to come in small numbers to work in offices and classrooms. If all goes well, Phase 2 will begin as early as May 22 and hopefully everyone will have access and can begin uploading the needed documents. Once we know that offices are open, we will have a Registration deadline date that we will send out via newsletter, email, and text and will also post on our website. Please be sure that your contact information, including an email address, is up to date in your SchoolMint account. Tell your friends and family that they can still apply to attend ACS for the 2020-2021 school year. Here is the link to apply: ACS Application

To address the educational gap, UNC-TV and the NC Department of Public Instruction are partnering to support school-age children learning at home by providing free, curriculum-informed, over-the-air content that is widely accessible to students—especially those with limited or no internet access. https://www.unctv.org/unctv-at-homelearning/. Rootle, UNC-TV's 24/7 PBS KIDS channel, will continue providing trusted programs providing education and entertainment in a safe haven for youngsters. In addition to its over-the-air channel, Rootle can be streamed live here. Plus, the UNC-TV channel offers a seven-hour block of children's programs weekdays, starting at 6:30 AM.

Best,

Leslie Paynter, M.Ed.

MY FAVORITE BOOK & AUTHOR FOR THE WEEK:

In honor of Mother’s Day (& Grandmother’s Day), I want to highlight a book about a grandmother that teaches her grandson a valuable lesson... gratitude! In the book Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña, every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus across town. But today, CJ wonders why they don’t own a car like his friend Colby. How come they always have to get off in the dirty part of town? Each question is met with an encouraging answer from his grandma, who helps him see the beauty—and fun—in their routine and the world around them.

CALL FOR EXTRA LEGOs, BLOCKS, BUILDING TOYS & BOOKS

If you are doing “spring cleaning”, we would love to have any extra LEGOS, blocks, and building materials for our LEGO/Engineering class. Also, if you have children’s books (all levels) that you are no longer using, please set those aside for us too! Once we are able to resume normal activities, I will arrange a time and a place for collecting the LEGOS, blocks, and books.
