CONSTRUCTION & SCHOOL PLANNING UPDATE

Dear Families, This week, the slab was poured and the lumber arrived. They completed the framing layout which means that the framing of the building has begun!

In January, I began interviewing potential teacher and staff candidates. My goal was to find and hire a team of high quality educators that had the same vision and values to implement our curriculum and uphold our mission. With the assistance of some of my most trusted educator colleagues, we have assembled a fantastic team of educators comprised of beginning and experienced teachers and staff. On our website, you can learn more about them. Meet the ACS Staff

Current Registration Information Since Phase 1 of the reopening of businesses began on May 8, I have noticed that our Registration in Progress and Registration Complete numbers have increased. Be sure that you are contacting your child’s doctor and school offices to access their records for the Registration Process. A few families have asked about what to do if their child’s doctor’s appointment isn’t until later in the summer. If your child’s doctor’s appointment isn’t until the summer, upload all the other documents and in that spot, upload a picture of the doctor appointment date. As long as status is "Registration in Progress," you will not lose your spot. We understand how hard it is to get certain documents and appointments right now.

Seesaw

I enjoyed hearing from several of you this week about your positive virtual learning experiences. Seesaw was one website/virtual learning platform that has been mentioned consistently by the parents, teachers, and staff. We are very fortunate that one of our First Grade Teachers, Chelsea Wilson, has been a Seesaw Ambassador for several years. Her current students used Seesaw throughout the year and have continued to use it for remote learning. She is currently supporting new users to Seesaw since some teachers began using it for the first time once schools closed and went to virtual learning. Chelsea plans to conduct a Seesaw professional development for our staff in August. On their site, they have some terrific FREE resources for parents and teachers. Seesaw

MY FAVORITE BOOK & AUTHOR FOR THE WEEK:

This week I want to highlight an author for the adults. If many of you have been like me, I have watched a lot of TV during the past two months. However, I need to do more reading! One of my favorite historical nonfiction writers is Erik Larson.

He has a new book that I am very excited to read entitled The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz. It begins with Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister when Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was only two weeks away. If you love history, you will really enjoy Erik Larson’s books. His books read more like novels than a book about history.

He has written a number of bestsellers, including Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania which is about the Lusitania’s final voyage in 1915, the politics of WWI, nautical craftsmanship and strategy, and on the key players in the eventual attack and sinking of the ship. He also wrote The Devil in the White City which was a National Book Award finalist in 2003. The book is about the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and a series of murders that were committed in the city around the time of the Fair. Hulu is developing a series based on the book. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are executive producers and DiCaprio will play the lead. I have not seen a release date, however you will definitely want to read the book first!

Erik Larson was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Long Island, New York. He studied Russian history at the University of Pennsylvania. He attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He was a features writer for The Wall Street Journal and Time magazine, where he is still a contributing writer.

If you are a member of your public library, you can check out his books in a digital format. Unfortunately, I have been on the waitlist for his new book since March. I am now #36, so I may have to buy the Kindle version for $14.99 on Amazon!

CALL FOR EXTRA LEGOs, BLOCKS, BUILDING TOYS & BOOKS

If you are doing “spring cleaning”, we would love to have any extra LEGOS, blocks, and building materials for our LEGO/Engineering class. Also, if you have children’s books (all levels) that you are no longer using, please set those aside for us too! Once we are able to resume normal activities, I will arrange a time and a place for collecting the LEGOS, blocks, and books.
