MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear ACS Families & Staff,
We are wrapping up the month of January and heading into February which means the end of the 2nd trimester is just around the corner. Teachers are continuing to gather MOY (middle of the year) data through benchmark assessments. This data provides us with information about how we are progressing toward our academic goals and identify areas in need of improvement.
Benchmarking isn't the only thing happening at ACS! Read on to find out more!
Here are a few highlights from the week:
Musical Theatre and Set Design Art students are busy working on 'The Lion King' musical! Stay tuned for details on how you can catch their performance in the spring.
First graders are learning how to use text features to read nonfiction texts and are learning to write informational pieces of their own.
Fourth graders are learning about equivalent fractions and how to compare fractions, a skill that is introduced in third grade.
Sixth grade teacher, Sarah Mayle, has been asked to join State Superintendent, Catherine Truitt's Teacher Leadership Council. The Teacher Leadership Council (TLC) is an advisory board for the Department of Public Instruction as well as a key communications conduit for educators in schools across the state. Â
Robotics students learned how to code for light and sound with Ms. Kinley!
Best,
Jamie Miller, Principal

Grades 3-6 NC Check-Ins (NCCI) - Late January/Early February
NC Check-Ins (NCCI) are interim assessments that are aligned to North Carolina grade-level content standards (for reading and mathematics) and North Carolina Essential Standards (for science).Â
The main purpose of NC Check-Ins is to provide students, teachers, and parents with immediate in-depth action data and a reliable estimate of students’ current performance on selected subsets of content standards. Students in grade 3-6 will take these short classroom assessments up to three times throughout the school year to provide you, your student, and their teachers with information about your student’s understanding of content areas. This will help you and your student’s teacher understand what he or she knows and can do so additional instruction can be provided.Â
Our second round of NCCI’s will take place, according to the following schedule:
Tuesday, Jan 30: Grades 3 & 4 Reading
Thursday, Feb 1: Grades 3 & 4 Math
Tuesday, Feb 6: Grades 5 & 6 Reading
Thursday, Feb 8: Grade 5 & 6 Math
Friday, Feb 9: Grade 5 Science
REMINDERS
MUST use carline unless there are specific situations that require something different (wheelchair, child with special needs, etc.). Those situations are cleared with the front office. Not using carline because the line is long, you are late for work, etc. are not acceptable reasons to skip the carline.Â

 STUDENT COUNCIL and AMBASSADORS
This past week the Ambassadors and Student Council met for our first World Changers Workshop. We discussed leadership, signed the code of conduct contracts, and met in groups to brainstorm and present ways to promote kindness and respect around campus, encourage teachers and younger students, demonstrate Coyote spirit, and foster a respect for the school environment.Â
We are very proud of our World Changers!
